Why buildings choose LTE lift gateways

A practical path to keep lift phones working without copper/NBN — fast to deploy, easy to manage.

Works without copper

Provides a dedicated voice path over 4G LTE where traditional lines are gone or unreliable.

Managed and monitored

We provision the SIM and monitor service status — issues are flagged early.

Fast deployment

Install in existing buildings with minimal disruption. Typical installs completed quickly after assessment.

Resilience options

Add UPS for backup power and use a corded handset for blackout operation.

Carrier choice

We select Telstra or Optus based on the strongest coverage at your site.

Keep your number

Retain existing lift numbers with number porting support.

Battery backup activates automatically on mains power loss — the gateway continues transmitting via 4G so your lift stays AS 1735.19 compliant even during an outage.

How the LTE lift gateway works

A dedicated LTE gateway provides a managed voice path for the lift phone. Simple, robust, purpose-built.

Install

Gateway installed in the lift machine/comms room and connected to the lift phone handset/ATA.

Activate SIM

SIM (Telstra or Optus) is provisioned for the site after a coverage check.

VoIP/voice path

Calls are carried over the 4G network via the managed voice service.

Backup power

Optional UPS keeps the gateway running during short outages; corded phone recommended.

Call path — LTE (4G only)

The lift handset connects to a dedicated LTE (4G) gateway. When powered and in coverage, emergency calls (including Triple Zero 000) route over the Telstra or Optus mobile network to the public phone network — no landline or PSTN required. Service health is monitored so issues are flagged early. If LTE coverage is weak, we’ll propose an alternative design.

Dual SIM failover is available on supported models — confirmed during the assessment.

Single SIM — standard 4G call path

The lift car connects to a Pickle-managed LTE gateway via a single managed SIM. When a passenger presses the emergency button, the call routes through 4G mobile network to the 24/7 monitoring centre, which dispatches a technician if required.

Dual SIM — automatic carrier failover

The Dual SIM gateway connects via Telstra 4G as the primary carrier and automatically switches to Optus 4G if signal is lost. Recommended for buildings with marginal LTE coverage or where maximum call reliability is required.

Lift Gateway LTE — frequently asked questions

Practical answers for strata committees and building managers. For compliance confirmation specific to your building, book a free assessment.

Is this compliant with Australian lift emergency phone regulations (AS1735/BCA)?

Emergency lift communications are governed by Australian Standard AS1735.19 and the Building Code of Australia. Our LTE gateway service supports these requirements — including emergency 000 routing over the Telstra/Optus mobile network — and we confirm building-specific compliance during your free assessment. UPS runtime is sized to your site.

Can a 4G gateway replace a copper lift phone line on the NBN?

Yes — with the copper/NBN disconnection, a managed 4G LTE gateway is the compliance-safe path for lift phones. We provide the managed SIM and monitoring; no landline or PSTN connection is required. We confirm coverage and compliance during your free assessment.

Is a lift phone required by law in Australia?

Yes. Australian Standard AS1735.19 and the Building Code of Australia require an emergency communication path in passenger lifts. Our gateway is designed to support these obligations — we verify the details for your building during the free assessment.

Will this work in buildings with poor mobile coverage?

We perform a site coverage check and can recommend placement and antennas if required. If stable LTE coverage cannot be achieved, we’ll propose an alternative design. Learn more: /solutions/strata-management-communications
